Supreme Court Amends Rules Governing the Admission to the Practice of Law in Georgia

Atlanta, October 3, 2003 -The Supreme Court of Georgia has amended Part B, Section 6 (c) of the Rules Governing the Admission to the Practice of Law in Georgia.

Section 6 (c) lists the subjects covered on the essay portion of the bar exam. Six subjects have been dropped from the list: Agency and Partnership; Corporations; Remedies; Damages; Conflict of Laws; and Federal Taxation. Business Organizations and Non-Monetary Remedies have been added to the list.

According to Hulett H. Askew, Director of the Office of Bar Admissions, the Court has taken this action at the recommendation of the Board of Bar Examiners after the Board conducted a thorough study of a number of factors regarding the essay portion of the bar exam. The Board and the Court believe that this new list of subjects continues to assure that Georgia has an essay portion of the bar exam that is comprehensive, challenging and fair.

Section 6 (c) now reads as follows:

Essay questions prepared by the Board of Bar Examiners shall be drawn from the following list of subjects, to wit: Business Organizations; Civil Procedure; Constitutional Law; Contracts; Criminal Law and Procedure; Evidence; Family Law; Federal Practice and Procedure; Georgia Practice and Procedure; Non-Monetary Remedies; Professional Ethics; Property; Torts; Trusts, Wills and Estates; and the Uniform Commercial Code (Articles 2, 3 & 9). Applicants will be provided forty-five minutes to answer each question.
